Chapter 7: Story of the Lesser
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----------------------------
It was 9 ‘o clock in the evening and Tatsuya decided it was time to end dance practice and go home. He grabs a towel and wipes the sweat off his face; his grey long sleeved shirt was drenched and clung to his body, an uncomfortable feeling. But it wasn’t really a problem; everyone in KAT-TUN had the same ordeal. From the corner of his eye, he observes the distance between Akanishi and Kazuya, he really did not know what to think, what to say, what to do, for he will always be an observer.
Junnosuke excuses himself from the small talks he shared with Koki and Nakamaru and runs to the quiet young man’s side who busied himself by packing up. Taguchi blushes a bit as he approached Ueda, using his own towel to dry off his damp hair causing it to be messy and seem unkempt.
“Ueda, do you want to hang out at Nakamaru’s for a while? He’s making beef curry. Oh wait, actually we’re making beef curry!”
“And Jin?”
“Koki already asked the both Akanishi and Kame but they declined, they’re busier than the four of us combined.”
Junnosuke laughs half-heartedly, a little hurt by Tatsuya’s disinterest. Ueda picks up his bottle of water and places it inside his sports bag, eyes trying to catch a glimpse of Jin who sat far behind Taguchi, only to end up startled to find his friend (and Kamenashi), things and all, gone. The taller gives him an inquisitive look and shifts his weight to the right foot leaning to the nearby table with his hand for support.
“Is there something wrong, Ueda?”
The question snaps him out of the daze and pulls him back to his current state. He shakes his head weakly that it puzzled the other. Yuichi and Tanaka jumped between the two, with Nakamaru capturing Junnosuke in a painful headlock and Koki placing his arm around Tatsuya’s shoulder.
The two found that they really didn’t have a choice.
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----------------------------
Taguchi smiles widely, amused at watching Koki enjoying himself with the scent of the rice wine Yuichi’s sister brought.
“I thought you said we were having beef curry?”
He asks the other, pretending to disappointed.
“We’re having beef curry and rice wine. It’s almost winter season! It’d be nice to drink every once in a while.”
The other replied in defense as though insulted, he had one of his thin eyebrows raised and his arms wrapped protectively around the bottle of wine. Junnosuke laughed leaning further back to the couch, enjoying the comfort it gave his sore back. He looks at Ueda who is beside him; the other smiled ever so slightly for a mere instant and returned his gaze back to his knees with his head bowed.
All four of them sat in the round dinner table making sounds from quiet chuckles to obnoxious laughter. The infectious mirth found its way to Tatsuya and Taguchi was happy to find that somehow that pain ebbed even only so slightly.
He took a spoonful of rice still looking at that rare serene expression Ueda made.
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----------------------------
The bottle Nakamaru’s sister gave him was now half empty or rather half full. Yuichi said it was half full but Koki insisted that the other was wrong and dismissed and instead said it was half empty. Both said men were drunk; it was ironic enough that only Ueda had the highest tolerance for alcohol for Taguchi didn’t seem very interested with drinking. Tatsuya laughed lightly watching the antics of those two again, but Junnosuke only scratches his nose shyly as the older man nudged him to laugh with him but he just smiled back and returned his attention to the glass of rice wine he had in his hand that he had hardly taken a sip of. Ueda was astonished to see the tall young man take all the liquor down his system with just one shot. Taguchi’s face was bitter and in dismay, the liquid felt like it burned his insides. He wasn’t a very good drinker.
“Are you okay?”
Ueda said, delicate hand on Junnosuke’s broad back, patting him gently.
“Of course he okay, here Junno, drink some more.”
Tanaka’s eyes were barely open as he picked up the bottle again pouring more of the liquor unto Taguchi’s glass despite the disapproval of Tatsuya and the refusal of the other, he didn’t look as if he was willing to hear them. It was quite a ruckus but somehow ended with Junnosuke drinking it anyway, one sip at a time.
“Hey.”
Yuichi mumbled as he lifted his glass and stared at the liquid inside ridiculously. But he had thoughts that were nowhere near ridiculous the time he let out that small word.
“Am I the only one who thinks— everything has become completely different? I can’t even remember the last time we laughed like this.”
Tatsuya shifts in his seat unnervingly, eyes not knowing where to look, he was afraid to see how Koki and Taguchi would respond.
“I hardly know you guys anymore…like those two. I hardly know those two anymore.”
He muttered sadly.
Junnosuke frowned; it was a violent blow that struck his mind. He took another sip, eyes downcast. If Nakamaru meant ‘those two’ as Akanishi and Kamenashi, he couldn’t help to feel anger, disappointment and isolation. Those two have begun to have a world of their own and so did the rest of them.
Nobody wanted to delve into the matter deeper, it was better if they didn’t talk about it anymore. They were too emotionally apart to fix anything with in the group. They were starting to live separate lives that hardly anyone of them had control of.
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----------------------------
Koki fell asleep lying down the carpeted floor while Nakamaru slept, head rested on the dinner table surrounded by empty unwashed glasses.
Ueda practically tripped over Koki as he walked to the couch but managed not to kick or step on the other man, he gritted his teeth placing down a pillow he got from Yuichi’s room.
He threw himself to the inviting coziness the couch offered; almost forgetting that it wasn’t really all that great. He closed his eyes only to hear footsteps approaching. Junnosuke brought with him two blankets and gave the other to Tatsuya a weary smile still plastered on his face even though it was already 4 ‘o clock in the morning.
The older man wrapped himself in the warm blanket up to his neck, rolling to his side as Taguchi sat down the floor leaning near where Ueda’s head rested, Junnosuke covered himself with the blanket he had and stretched his long legs across the cold floor.
“I always seem to forget.”
“Forget what?”
“Your present.”
“Oh. That story book again. It’s okay.”
“No, it’s not okay!”
“Actually, it’s just fine Ueda.”
Tatsuya shook his head under the sheets and leaned towards Taguchi.
“Tell me, what is it about?”
“Nothing special. It’s just a fairytale…about some toy soldier, a dancer...a—”
“The Steadfast Tin Soldier?”
Their voices were kept low trying not to wake any of the two up. Taguchi chuckled and ran a hand through his fine hair, unfathomable joy reaching his heart. His eyes show a beautiful glint to them and a genuine smile is revealed. He gives Ueda a ‘how did you know?’ look still quite surprised.
Tatsuya hits the side of his head only softly, pouting.
“What makes you think I wouldn’t know?”
“I-I just thought you…”
“I loved that story. It was so sad. Junno, do you think it’s sad?”
Junnosuke shakes his head as a disagreement and the other looks at him with perplexity, for Ueda in no way found the tragic end a happy ending.
“So then…you think it’s happy?”
“No. I just think it’s the way things really are.”
“What do you mean? You’re not that drunk are you?”
Taguchi laughs again, the soft ringing laughter is beautiful, mesmerizing even. And yet the other couldn’t help but continue to stare at him in with a quizzical look.
“A limp soldier with one leg is never meant to be loved back.”
